The Jedi are known throughout the galaxy for their Force powers. Many may think the life of a Jedi is easy, considering the superhuman powers they possess, but that is far from the truth. Although Jedi walk in the light, there is always the temptation there, in the back of their mind, to entertain the dark side that is always there, beckoning them towards a sense of individualistic power, and the opportunity to life for themself, to live life as they choose, and not how the Jedi council chooses (or dictates). Jedi often feel caught or trapped in the sticky web of Jedi philosophy and beliefs, and sometimes they feel an overwhelming urge to cut themselves free of this web, so they can finally live life on their own terms, even if that means abandoning the Jedi code and the Jedi community in which they reside. For some Jedi, the rules and regulations that they have to live by are suffocating, and they feel caught in the middle between the light side and the dark side, perpetually experiencing emotional turmoil, but unable to reveal their true feelings to the Jedi council, and even their Jedi peers. Some Jedi feel this pull to the dark side more strongly than other Jedi, and the temptations of the dark side can be very great, although the Jedi do strive to remain on the side of the light. If you yourself, the reader of these words, are a Jedi, and you feel the dark side tempting you from time to time, know that it is a natural part of the life of a Jedi, and it is something that most Jedi have to deal with on a regular basis. It’s easy to fall to the dark side, but remaining in the light takes a type of strength that is rare in this galaxy. Jedi are trained to be mentally tough, which is why they can usually subdue to the temptations of the dark side. Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts and feelings on this topic. As Jedi, we should feel a certain sense of pride about the path that we have taken in life, and about the skills and abilities that we have developed, and continue to develop, not only with the Force, and with the lightsaber, but also the Jedi spirit that we cultivate in our hearts. Being a Jedi is not just about fighting, but it is also about retaining a certain sense of peace in our own lives, and striving to maintain peace on the many planets that populate the galaxy. As Jedi, when we have peace in our own hearts, then our lives as Jedi will improve, our energy will flow better, naturally improving our connection to the Force, and positively affecting all aspects of not only our lives, but all the other lives that we come into contact with. Yes, of course, Jedi should be trained and ready for battle at any moment, but even in battle, it is paramount for the Jedi to have a sense of peace or harmony within their hearts, enabling them to act and operate at their highest potential. Peace of mind (and heart) is the cornerstone or the foundation that every Jedi needs. From peace, we can derive a certain strength that will serve us well in our lives as jedi. Jedi should do their best to maintain peak performance when it comes to being active. A Jedi should be able to run fast, jump high, roll on the floor to evade danger, and should have a good basic grounding in hand-to-hand combat. These are all activities that require high energy and daily practice. Each day, a Jedi should strive to build on the skills he or she has, which means you should strive to increase your running speed, increase the height of your jumps, increase the distance and height of your rolls, and increase the power and effectiveness of your hand-to-hand combat. A Jedi should have a good level of physical fitness, as it serves as the basis and foundation of everything else that a Jedi does in life. All the basic physical skills complement each other. Skills such as jumping and rolling can benefit your lightsaber combat. Having the skill to run fast over long distances can allow you to track an enemy, or if necessary, to flee and escape from an enemy (or even an army) that is beyond your fighting capabilities. Your hand-to-hand combat skills can also be used during lightsaber combat, where you see a split-second opportunity to slip in a quick punch or kick to the opponent during close-quarter combat, when your lightsabers may be locked, or when you or the opponent is pinned against the floor or pinned against a wall. Hand-to-hand combat is a skill that can give you the edge even in lightsaber duels. Basically, as a Jedi, you should always be ready and prepared for anything in life, because if you are not prepared, you could face serious injury, or even worse. Let this message be a reminder for you, and for myself also, to work on our basic physical skills each day, or at least a couple of days per week, so that we develop that inner confidence to be ready for anything in life, to protect ourselves, to protect the people we love, and to protect the innocent citizens of the galaxy. The truth is that meditation is not necessary for developing your connection with the Force. There are other ways that you can develop and deepen your connection with the Force, and the method that I use is contemplation. Instead of spending hours meditating on the Force, I prefer to spend that time contemplating the Force. The two may sound similar, but actually meditation and contemplation are in fact quite different. Of course, whether you believe mediation is important or not comes down to personal opinion. If something worked for you, then continue doing it. If you feel you benefit from time spent in mediation every day, then I fully support your choice to do that. However, on the other hand, if a Jedi has chosen to never to meditate at all, but prefers to spend their time deep in contemplation, then I fully respect that too. As we know, there is often more than one path to the top of the mountain, which means we can choose the path that is more suitable for us, and in so doing, we need not judge others on the path they have chosen for themselves. A Jedi should work to develop his or her connection with the Force every day, so whether you meditate, contemplate, or use some other method or practice, is not of primary importance. What is most important is that your ability to use the Force does slowly grow stronger over time, as a result of the training or practice you do with your own mind. Here is the first video on my new Jedi YouTube channel: Jedi understand that there is always room for improvement in one’s skills and abilities, and this is especially true of one’s skill with a lightsaber. It is foolish to think we have mastered every technique with the lightsaber. Even Jedi Masters know that though other’s may look upon their lightsaber skills as perfect, in the Jedi Masters mind, perfection can never be attained, but is an ideal to always be striving towards. Even if one feels their lightsaber form cannot be improved upon any more, such things as the speed of the form or the strength of the form can always be increased and improved upon. Even the greatest Jedi of all, Jedi Grandmaster Yoda, believes that technique can and should always be improved upon. This means that we should find time each day, even if it’s only for 10 minutes, to practice our lightsaber techniques such as basic blocks and strikes, and also spinning and twirling the lightsaber. A jedi who can wield a lightsaber skillfully, is a sign of a Jedi who has true dedication to his or her path. I should add also that lightsaber training, whether alone or with a partner, is an excellent physical workout for the body, and daily lightsaber practice can keep one’s body strong and nimble, and if ever a real-life combat situation arises, your daily lightsaber training will serve you well in being victorious in battle against the enemy. I would say 20 – 30 minutes of lightsaber training per day is sufficient to give your body a good workout and also to see improvement in your lightsaber technique over time. Practice makes improvement, and every Jedi should want to be continuously improving their skills with a lightsaber. Here is a video of me lightsaber training from almost 7 years ago: The Force is, as we know, a mysterious thing, and for many beings it is beyond their realm of understanding. For us Jedi though, we know the Force intimately, but some Jedi have a stronger bond with the Force than others, and therefore are able to wield more power with the Force. This may be due to natural talent with the Force, or may be due to years of hardship and struggle, training for hours every day to improve their understanding of, and their connection to the Force. We, each of us, are aware of our current level of skill with the Force, just as we are each aware of the goals we would like to attain regarding Force power in the future. Even though all Jedi have varying degrees of skill in using the Force, we each should respect and be content with our current level, while continually striving to improve our Force powers every day. Your daily Jedi training should not only see you practicing and keeping your skills sharp in hand-to-hand combat, lightsaber training, and practicing your various Force powers, but your daily training should also involve at least 1 hour of Force meditation or contemplation, and by this I mean that through your mind or consciousness alone you allow yourself to gently merge with the Force, becoming one with it, and allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the Force. Of course, we all have our normal daily tasks and duties to take care of, but continually improving one’s understanding and connection to the Force should be paramount in the mind of all Jedi. We should never take our connection to the Force for granted, but should continually strive to work on and improve our relationship with the Force, so that with each passing year, we become stronger jedi.
